Basin

// Veronica Tucker

The bowl is older than the house
a hairline crack running through it

no one remembers naming it

Water gathers anyway
obedient to shape

You lower your hands
as if returning them

The first touch is always a shock
then not

Something loosens
not dirt

a sense of being held
too long in one position

You keep going
past enough

until the water clouds

until your hands look
misplaced
