Looking the Other Way

//

When you live near a lake, you do not see the fog
on the horizon as fog, but as a reflection of blue
clouds drifting, like mountains moving, without seeming

to move like red-throated loons vanishing beneath
Ontario’s chilly surface— the clouds rise without sound
as the loons come to light, floating silently by.
